Harwell & Cook Orthodontics

Asset 101

Overbites, underbites, and crossbites are bite problems that require early orthodontic correction to avoid issues such as jaw pain and poor oral health.

One of the many services we offer here at Harwell & Cook Orthodontics is the successful correction of bite misalignment issues. If our orthodontists determine that you or your child has an uneven bite, we will recommend a personalized treatment plan for excellent results.

Bite problems we encounter at our practice include overbites, underbites, and crossbites. These conditions respond very well to orthodontic correction, which is good news because an uneven bite can cause many problems that are important to address early, including

  • Jaw pain
  • Poor oral health including damaged enamel, tooth decay, bad breath, gum disease, or tooth loss
  • Difficulty brushing or flossing
  • Speech issues
  • Facial pain
  • TMJ discomfort

Orthodontics has made leaps and bounds in the last few decades, and this has brought us great new appliances for correcting bite problems. We’ve all heard stories of kids having to go to school wearing headgear—this cumbersome device used to be the only option! Nowadays, we have modern devices like the Carriere appliance, and we can use elastics to correct the bite without headgear. During your consultation, your orthodontist can determine which type of bite correction method is best for you or your child, and then we will create a treatment plan to get the bite aligned comfortably and quickly.

Our patients have shared their personal stories about bite correction treatment at our practice to help you feel more at ease about your or your child’s treatment.

At Harwell & Cook Orthodontics, we typically use a combination of elastic bands and braces to adjust the bite and guide the jaw into alignment. For more severe bites issues, we may use appliances that fit inside the mouth and are not removable, like the Carriere appliance, to correct the problem. While the Carriere appliance is not removable, it is a very efficient and comfortable device that speedily corrects the bite and keeps those bulky headgear contraptions far away from our happy patients! Here’s more on the tools we use to correct misaligned bites:

  • The Carriere appliance. This device is placed on the back molars using a metal connector piece between the upper and lower jaw. The Carriere appliance will guide the bite into the correct position gently over time, and since the Carriere appliance is not removable, it ensures that the treatment process stays on target for effective and fast results.
  • Elastics. These handy little tools work like the Carriere appliance to guide the bite into proper position, but they are removable. Elastics are to be worn 24 hours a day and should only be removed for brushing, flossing, or replacing the elastics with new ones. Patients are shown how to easily change the elastics at least every 12 hours to ensure their best function.

With decades of experience, our team is highly qualified in the use of both the Carriere appliance and elastics for successful bite correction. These treatments are proven and safe for the efficient and comfortable correction of most types of bite misalignment problems.
